Donations Needed!

We need your help!!

Part of our mission within Student Activities and College Village is to supply our students with service projects multiple times each semester. One way we do this is by putting on a Service for a Slice program each month where students help with the designated service project (on campus) and then they are supplied dinner! In October, our service project will be to help the Sole Hope Project. Their core purpose is to effectively put in place preventive methods to combat diseases that enter through the feet and to create a positive physical and spiritual difference in the lives of individuals in impoverished communities. Please take a look at the website: We are having what they refer to as a Party for a Purpose!!

With that said, we would like to ask for your help! Please donate blue jeans you no longer need and cleaned out milk/juice gallon containers. These two items will be used to cut out the materials to use for making shoes!

You can drop off these items at Student Activities until Tuesday, September 29th.

Thank you for your help.

If anyone would like to set up one of these Party for a Purpose programs within their departments please let me know and we can do that as well!

Can you say ThurpleThurple what??

Purple is the signature color for Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

Please show your support for this campaign against domestic violence by wearing PURPLE on THURSDAYS during the month of October – sport your purple socks, purple shirts, purple shoes, purple ties, purple jewelry, anything purple! We will be joining our SUNY partners and turning our campus PURPLE for our annual SHINE THE LIGHT campaign on Wednesday, October 21st (more exciting details to come…)!!!

~WAIT,…. there’s more!~

We are also proud to announce that GCC is teaming us with the Genesee County YWCA for an event called:

The YWCA has proclaimed the first Thursday of the month as Healthy Relationships Day and, as a result,
is planning a series of events to happen on this day. That includes the annual Stiletto & Sneaker Walk, an agency partner thank-you breakfast, balloon launch and Community Harvest Supper to cap off the day with a delicious meal prepared with local agricultural produce and products. Local school districts will also be invited to participate by wearing purple and showing support with positive messages focused
on healthy relationships.

  • Recent global prevalence figures indicate that 35% of women worldwide have experienced either intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.
  • On average, 30% of women who have been in a relationship report that they have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence by their partner.
  • Globally, as many as 38% of murders of women are committed by an intimate partner.

County Emergency Preparedness Drill September 25

Genesee Community College and the Genesee and Orleans County Health Departments are holding a mock Medication Point of Dispensing (POD) exercise next Friday, September 25th from11:00 am – 1:00 pm.  The drill will be held in the Forum.  The point of this exercise is to teach the community how to respond if an emergency of this type were to occur and to test the County’s ability to dispense medications to a large portion of  the public.

The Health Department must have everyone who participates in the POD exercise sign a permission slip.  There will be an opportunity to pre-register next week or register at the event.

The Health Department and GCC need participation from the majority of people on campus that day.  Please take a few minutes on the 25th to participate. Students are welcome to attend as well.

At the POD, once you go through the line you will receive a mock medication, since this is merely a drill, they will be dispensing Skittles & M&Ms.  As a thank you for participating there will be a slice of pizza and water available. (If you would like more than one slice of pizza – go through the line more than once. There is no limit on the number of times you can go through the line.)

This POD will be held on Friday September 25 from 11:00 a.m.1:00 p.m.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Historical Horizons History Initiative

I wanted to share with everyone the news that GCC will be hosting a new history initiative – Historical Horizons.  Sponsored by the History Club, the central piece (and only piece at present) will be a new lecture series that will take up a wide array of historical topics.  Tonight we inaugurate the new lecture series with a lecture entitled “The Alamo – The Myth, the Reality…and John Wayne.”  Our first speaker is Tom Schobert, a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel and more recently one of the most respected Gen. Robert E. Lee impressionists.

Historical Horizons lectures in Batavia are held the first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 PM in T102 and are FREE and open to the public.  It is our hope to expand the lectures to the campus centers in the near future.  The calendar of lectures for the fall semester follows.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Professor Maxfield at anytime.  Thank you.
