Diversity Presentations! Save the Dates!

Just a reminder of the info below, and please consider attending one or both of these next week!  Faculty – please also consider these for any extra credit opportunities for your students as well.

GCC’s Diversity Committee is proud to inform you about two ‘diversity presentations’ being offered next week by our own faculty members!

Please Save-the-Dates for each of these and attend if you can!

Please also pass along to students!  (Although the Oct 15th presentation is geared toward faculty/staff/administration, we would welcome any students who would like to attend that as well)!

Thanks for your support and we hope to see you there!

All GCC faculty, staff and administration are invited to this presentation on cultural diversity.  We will explore concepts such as multiculturalism, ethnocentrism, cultural relativism, prejudice and privilege.  We will explore ways to incorporate inclusion of diverse cultures into the academic environment, and how doing so might change the way we approach Diversity Awareness Month.

Tuesday, October 16th
·        La Laguna, Honduras:  Lessons in Diversity
12:30-1:30pm
B300
Presented by Kathleen Kimber, Professor of Spanish
All are invited to hear GCC professor, Kathleen Kimber, talk about her recent trip to La Laguna, Honduras.  You will hear about her experiences working on an Indian reservation translating at a medical clinic, building latrines and conducting computer training for elementary school students.  Have you ever wondered what it would be like to grow up having to learn your traditional tribal language in school as a foreign language?  What life is like without electricity and running water?  What does cultural identity, diversity and tolerance mean?  This talk will touch on cultural, linguistic and economic diversity issues.
